อนันตนาคราชเป็นพาหนะของพระวิษณุหรือพระนารายณ์ โดยอยู่ในลักษณะขดเป็นแท่นบัลลังก์ เพื่อให้พระนารายณ์บรรทม ด้วยลักษณะเช่นนี้เองเป็นที่มาของพระนารายณ์บรรทมสินธุ์ อีกตํานานหนึ่งเล่าว่าเมื่อสิ้นแต่ละกัลย์ เศษนาคจะเป็นผู้พ่นพิษไฟพิษไฟทําลายสัตว์โลกทั้งปวง แต่ตัวเองไม่ตาย จึงได้ชื่อว่า อนันตะ ซึ่งแปลว่าไม่มีที่สิ้นสุด ตามไศวนิกายเล่าว่า เศษนาคเกิดจากสายธุรํา (สายเครื่องหมายวรรณะพราหมณ์ กษัตริย์ และแพศย์ สวมจากซ้ายไปขวา เรียกว่า สายธุรํา, ธุหรํ่ายัชโญปวีต หรือ สายมงคล ก็เรียก) ซึ่งพระอิศวรทรงเปลื้องออกจากพระวรกาย ดังนั้นจึงเป็นพญานาคที่มีอิทธิฤทธิ์มาก อนันตนาคราชเคยเห็นพระอิศวรฟ้อนรำด้วยท่าอันงดงามและใคร่อยากจะชมอีก จึงทูลขอให้พระอิศวรทรงฟ้อนรําอีกครั้ง พระอิศวรจึงเสด็จลงมาฟ้อนรําในโลกมนุษย์ตรงที่ซึ่งปัจจุบันเป็นที่ตั้งของวิหารฮินดูชื่อ จิทัมพรัม ในอินเดียใต้ มนุษย์ได้จดจำท่ารำต่าง ๆของพระอิศวรไว้เกิดเป็นนตํานานฟ้อนรําของอินเดีย และพระอิศวรก็เป็นที่นับถือกันในชื่อ นาฏราช ตามความเชื่อของศาสนาฮินดู อนันตนาคราช หรือเศษนาค นับเป็นนเทพที่ทรงอิทธิฤทธิ์องค์หนึ่ง ซึ่งชาวฮินดูนับถือพร้อมไปกับพระนารายณ์หรือพระวิษณุ มนตร์บูชาพญาอนันตนาคราช นาคเทวะ ปรี ตา ภวันติหะ คานติมาปโนติ เวน วิภี/ สัมศานติ โลก มา สาทยะ โมทเต ศาศติช สมาช// "มุจลินท์" อันตั้งอยู่ในทิศบูรพาหรือทิศอาคเนย์ แห่งไม้มหาโพธิ์ เสวยวิมุติสุขอยู่ ณ ที่นั้นอีก ๗ วัน มุจลินท์นาคราชในกาลนั้นฝนตกพรำตลอด ๗ วัน พญานาคมีนามว่า "มุจลินท์นาคราช" มีอานุภาพมาก อยู่ที่สระโบกขรณี ใกล้ต้นมุจลินท์พฤกษ์นั้น มีความเลื่อมใสในพระศิริวิลาศ พร้อมด้วยพระรัศมีโอภาสอันงามล่วงล้ำเทพยดาทั้งหลาย จึงเข้าไปใกล้แล้วขดเข้าซึ่งขนดกาย แวดวงพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าได้ ๗ รอบ และแผ่พังพานอันใหญ่ ป้องปกเบื้องบนพระเศียร มิให้ลมและฝนถูกต้องพระกายพระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้า ครั้งล่วง ๗ วัน ฝนหายขาดแล้ว พญานาคก็คลายขนดจำแลงกายเป็นมานพ เข้าไปถวายอัญชลีเฉพาะพระพักตร์ พระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าทรงเปล่งอุทานวาจาว่า "ความสงัดเป็นสุข สำหรับบุคคลผู้มีธรรมอันเห็นแล้ว ยินดีอยู่ในที่สงัด รู้เห็นตามความเป็นจริง ความไม่เบียดเบียน คือ ความสำรวมในสัตว์ทั้งหลาย และความปราศจากความกำหนัด คือ ความล่วงกามทั้งหลายเสียได้ด้วยประการทั้งปวง เป็นสุขในโลก ความนำอัสมิมานะ คือความถือตัวออกให้หมดไปเป็นสุขอย่างยิ่ง" ครั้นล่วง ๗ วันแล้ว เสด็จออกจากร่มไม้มุจลินท์ ไปยังร่มไม้เกตุ อันมีนามว่า "ราชายตนะ" อันอยู่ในทิศทักษิณ แห่งต้นมหาโพธิ์ เสวยวิมุติสุข ณ ที่นั้น สิ้น ๗ วัน เป็นอวสาน ในกาลนั้น ท้าวสักกะอมรินทราธิราช ทรงดำริว่า พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้ามิได้เสวยพระกระยาหารนับแต่กาลตรัสรู้มาได้ ๔๙ วันแล้ว จึงได้เสด็จลงมาจากเทวโลก น้อมผลสมออันเป็นทิพยโอสถเข้าไปถวาย พระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าทรงรับผลสมอเสวย แล้วทรงสรีระกิจลงพระบังคม ทรงสำราญพระกายแล้ว เสด็จเข้าประทับยังร่มไม้ราชายตนะพฤกษ์นั้น. พญานาโคบุตรโคดม หรือ พญามุจลินทร์นาคราช เป็นพญานาคราชที่เกี่ยวข้องกับพระพุทธเจ้า ซึ่งมีการกล่าวถึงในพุทธประวัติและกล่าวในพระไตรปิฎกหลังจากพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าตรัสรู้ธรรมพิเศษแล้ว พระองค์ได้เสด็จไปตามเมืองต่างๆ เพื่อแสดงธรรมเทศนา มีครั้งหนึ่งได้เสด็จออกจากร่มไม้อธุปปาลนิโครธ ไปยังร่มไม้จิกชื่อ "มุจลินทร์" ทรงนั่งเสวยวิมุตติสุข อยู่ 7 วัน คราวเดียวกันนั้นมีฝนตกพรำๆ ประกอบไปด้วยลมหนาวตลอด 7 วัน ได้มีพญามุจลินทร์นาคราชเจ้าวิสุทธิเทวา เข้ามาวงด้วยขด 7 รอบ พร้อมกับแผ่พังพานปกพระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้า เพื่อจะป้องกันฝนตกและลมมิให้ถูกพระวรกาย หลังจากฝนหายแล้ว คลายขนดออก แปลงเพศเป็นมานพมายืนเฝ้าที่เบื้องพระพักตร์ ด้วยความศรัทธาอย่างแรงกล้า เหตุการณ์ครั้งนี้จึงเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของประวัติพระพุทธรูปปางนาคปรก สำหรับผู้ที่เกิดวันเสาร์ เป็นพญานาคราชที่อยู่ในตระกลูเอราปัถถะ มีพระวรกายเป็นสีเทาฮินดู ปล้องพระนาภี(ท้อง) สีเงินยวง ส่วนพระเศียรเป็นสีทอง ถ้าในบริเวรประเทศไทยเรา พระองค์มักจะปรากฏ อยู่แถบลุ่มแม่น้ำปิง บริเวณจังหวัดตาก ลงมาถึงแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา จังหวัดนครสวรรค์ 3.พญาภุชงค์นาคราช พญาภุชงค์นาคราชเจ้าวิสุทธิเทวา เป็นพญานาคราชประจำองค์พระศิวะเทพ หรือ พระอิศวรเจ้า อยู่ในตระกลู วิรูปักษ์ มีพระวรกายเป็นสีเทาฮินดู พระนาภี และ พระเศียรเป็นสีแดง มีพระเศียร ตั้งแต่ ๑ ,๓ ,๕ ,๗ ,๙ แล้วแต่ปางค์ แต่ส่วนใหญ่ที่ปรากฎให้เห็น คือ ๑ เศียร และ ๗ เศียร ......... มีพระอัครมเหสี คือ พญานาคิณีเทวีศรีปางตาล ( แม่ย่าทองคำ ) ซึ่งเป็นพญานาคิณีประจำองค์แม่พระอุมาเทวี มเหสีของพระศิวะเทพ ประวัติปู่ภุชงค์นาคราช พญาภุชงค์นาคราชเจ้าวิสุทธิเทวาเป็นพญานาคราชประจำองค์พระศิวะเทพ หรือพระอิศวรเจ้าอยู่ในตระกลู วิรูปักษ์ มีพระวรกายเป็นสีเทาฮินดู พระนาภีและพระเศียรเป็นสีแดง มีพระเศียร ตั้งแต่ ๑ ,๓ ,๕ ,๗ ,๙ แล้วแต่ปางค์แต่ส่วนใหญ่ที่ปรากฎให้เห็นคือ๑เศียรและ๗เศียรมีพระอครมเหษีคือ พญานาคิณีเทวีศรีปางตาล ( แม่ย่าทองคำ ) ซึ่งเป็นพญานาคิณีประจำองค์แม่พระอุมาเทวี มเหสีของพระศิวะเทพ พญาภุชงค์นาคราชมีอุปนิสัยตรงไปตรงมา ดูภายนอกมองว่าท่านดุแต่แท้จริงแล้วท่านใจดีมาก รูปร่างสง่างาม อายุเปรียบกับคนอายุราว ๕๐ กว่าๆ ท่านชอบศึกษาธรรมเป็นนิสัยหลังจากสละจากกษัตริย์แล้วท่านได้บำเพ็ญตบะเป็นฤๅษีและได้บำเพ็ญมาถึงทุกวันนี้ ส่วนท่านอาศัยอยู่น่านน้ำอ่าวไทยตลอดถึงอันดามันคือน่านน้ำเข็มและได้อยู่ตามถ้ำต่างๆทั้วประเทศจึงได้พบเห็นว่าท่านอยู่แถบทุกภาค ของประเทศ ในขณะเดียวกันท่านได้เป็นฤๅษีในชั้นพรหมมีวิมานอยู่ที่พรหมโลก หนึ่งในมหาเทพผู้เป็นใหญ่ในสามพระองค์ อันได้แก่ พระพรหม ( ผู้สร้าง) พระนารายณ์ ( ผู้รักษา) ลัทธิไวษณพ นิกาย นับถือพระองค์เป็นเทพสูงสุด พระศิวะ (ผู้ทำลาย(ความชั่วร้าย))ลัทธิไศยวนิกาย นับถือพระองค์เป็นเทพสูงสุด ถ้าสามพระองค์รวมกัน จะเป็นพระตรีมูรติ อิทธิพลของมหาเทพทั้งสามพระองค์มักจะเกี่ยวข้องกับคนไทยมาช้านาน โดยเฉพาะช่วงสมัยการปกครองแบบสมบูรณาญาสิทธิราชย์ พระนามของพระองค์
